Botox

A woman's face after getting Botox by her Owasso dentist at Jillian Prather Family Dentistry. The environment can be harsh, particularly for your skin. Between hard winds, cold temperatures, dry air, humidity, smog, and other impurities, your skin gets exposed to a lot. In addition to dealing with all of these issues, you also have to deal with the natural aging process. While aging skin is completely normal, the outside environment can speed the process up. Fine lines and wrinkles that form on your face can cause you to appear much older than you are. At Jillian Prather Family Dentistry, we can help to eliminate the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a more youthful appearance, with Botox.

What is Botox?

Botox is a type of botulinum toxin A, a neurotoxin that is derived from Clostridium botulinum. It is a purified protein that has been approved by the FDA for cosmetic use. Botox is an injectable treatment that is injected sub-dermally, or directly into the skin. When used for cosmetic purposes, it can reduce, and even eliminate, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, leaving you with younger, smoother looking skin and greater confidence.

What Can Botox Be Used For?

Botox has several cosmetic uses. These include reducing the appearance of:
•  Lines across your forehead.
•  Lines around the eyes, more commonly known as crow’s feet.
•  Lines near your mouth, as well as those on your lips.

Botox can also be used for other treatments as well, including:
•  Excessive sweating, called hyperhidrosis.
•  Muscle spasms.
•  Migraine headaches.
•  TMJ disorder.

How Botox Works

Botox is a liquid treatment that is injected directly into the skin. Once injected, it goes to work blocking the signals sent by nerves to target muscles. This prevents the muscles from contracting. The skin is given an opportunity to smooth out, reducing, and eliminating, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles.

Getting Botox injections is quick and simple. Treatments generally take only about 20 minutes of your time. The Botox is injected using a fine tipped needle. There is no need for local anesthetics. Most patients report feeling only minor discomfort or a slight pinching feeling when the needle is inserted into the skin. It typically takes 3 to 7 days to see the full effects of your Botox treatment. You may notice some bruising at the injection sites, but it should disappear in just a couple of days.

Is Botox Safe?

Botox is an FDA approved procedure and is regarded as a safe, highly effective treatment. We are highly trained and experienced in administering Botox injections. Despite its safety, there are some risks associated with treatment, just as there are risks associated with any other type of treatment. Common risks of Botox include:

•  Eyelid drooping.
•  Muscle freezing.
•  Asymmetry of facial features.

More serious, but much rarer, risks include:
•  Difficulty breathing.
•  Trouble swallowing.
•  Difficulty speaking properly.

Is Botox a Permanent Treatment?

While effective, Botox is not a permanent treatment. Typically, results of one treatment last 4 to 6 months. As the effects begin to wear off, the signals between your nerves and facial muscles are restored. This means that the muscles can begin contracting again, leading to the reappearance of lines and wrinkles. To maintain the results of your Botox treatment, it is necessary to have periodic retreatments done.

Botox is an incredibly effective treatment for reducing and even eliminating, the appearance of fine lines and wrinkles, restoring a more youthful, confident appearance. Call Jillian Prather Family Dentistry today at (918) 401-9933 for more information and to schedule your consultation.
