Your smile is a key feature in how others perceive you. It is often the very first thing that people notice about you. A major factor in the quality of your smile is the appearance of your teeth. Any imperfections, even minor ones, can significantly impact your smile, and the impressions you leave. Flaws in your teeth can affect how you feel about your smile as well and impact your confidence. When you are self-conscious about your smile, you might try to hide it. Small actions like covering your mouth with your hand might not seem like a big deal, but they can speak volumes. At Jillian Prather Family Dentistry, we can treat minor cosmetic flaws in your teeth, giving you back your smile and your confidence, with dental bonding.

Minor Flaws that Can Majorly Affect Your Smile

There are some different types of minor flaws that can have a major impact on the quality of your smile. These flaws include:
•  Small chips or cracks that only affect the enamel layer of your teeth.
•  Minor spacing issues.
•  Teeth that are smaller than others, or teeth that are oddly shaped.
•  Discoloration.

What is Dental Bonding?

Dental bonding is a cosmetic procedure that is performed to correct minor flaws in your teeth, improving the quality of your smile as well as your confidence. This procedure involves the use of composite resin, a tooth-colored material made from plastic, fine glass, and other materials. Composite resin is a very versatile material that can be shaped and molded to meet some different needs. Moreover, because it is tooth colored, it blends in perfectly with the rest of your natural tooth structure, providing you with a seamless, beautiful restoration.

A Quick, Simple Procedure

The dental bonding process is both quick and simple. It typically takes less than an hour to complete. In many cases, bonding can be completed in about 30 minutes. It is a non-invasive procedure that is completely painless. There is no need for a local anesthetic.

We begin by cleaning your teeth. Next, an acid etch is applied to the treatment areas. This acid etch a rough texture on your tooth enamel that will help to enhance the bond between the composite resin material and your natural teeth. The acid is washed off, and your teeth are dried. Next, the composite resin material is applied and shaped to provide you with the best aesthetic results. Once you are satisfied with the appearance of your teeth, we then use a specialized light to cure, or dry, the composite resin. You leave the office with a beautifully restored smile.

Does Bonding Require Special Care?

While dental bonding is incredibly effective, and they can be brushed and flossed just like your natural teeth, there are some considerations that you should keep in mind. Composite resin can be damaged. Avoid biting and chewing on hard objects like ice and popcorn kernels, and do not use your teeth as tools. Additionally, composite resin can stain. Unlike your natural tooth enamel, however, it cannot be whitened. Limit foods and beverages that stain and avoid smoking to keep your bonding beautiful.
